Happy New Year to all! I am settling back in to teaching/working/creating after a truly lovely and much needed break over the holidays – I spent time with family in Vermont and Montreal, and snuck in a getaway to New York City to visit one of my closest friends. It was pretty fantastic to get out of Boston for a little, re-center and breathe (and, admittedly, to not write a lesson plan for a few days!).

To kick off 2018, I am participating for the second year in a row in NACHMO Boston (National Choreography Month). I am creating a new solo on myself, within the festival’s parameters that all work be new and made solely within the month of January. This is the perfect opportunity to expand my Headlines project and make it into a performance piece, so I am centering my process on language pulled from each day’s news media. I’m excited to use this text-based concept to create a performance-ready work within such a short time frame; to perform a solo for the first time since 2014 (!); and to be a part of such a great festival filled with Boston-based artists.
I’ve also put out the call for my audience to send me articles they come across themselves containing words or excerpts that could lend themselves to movement (submission form can be found here).
When I took the Gaga Summer Intensive this past summer at Mark Morris, Bobbi Jene Smith was answering a question during an end-of-day Q&A session and said, “Don’t wait around for your dream piece, a piece perfect for you – if you have an idea, if you know what that looks like, then just go and make it.” I’m finally really feeling like I’ve latched onto an idea and a movement aesthetic that I can fully live within onstage. I’m eager to see it through, utilize all the tools I’ve collected over the last couple years, and have that elusive dream experience of my own making.
